The First Look: A Modern Wedding Tradition

August 6, 2024

first look between bride and groom

One of the biggest decisions you will make when planning your wedding is whether or not to have a first look. A first look is a private moment where the couple sees each other before the ceremony, away from guests.

In recent years, the first look has become incredibly popular. About 80% of the couples that I photograph their weddings have chosen to do one. However, it’s important to remember that this decision is entirely yours. I never pressure couples into doing a first look; it’s always about what you envision for your special day. If you’re on the fence, here are the pros and cons of doing a first look, which may help you decide if it’s the right choice.

The Pros of a First Look:

Calming Nerves:

One of the most significant advantages of a first look is its ability to calm pre-wedding jitters. Seeing each other before the ceremony can significantly reduce anxiety. Imagine the relief of sharing a private moment with your partner, away from the crowd, to breathe and be together. This can make a huge difference, especially if standing in front of many people makes you nervous.

More Time for Photos:

A first look opens up more opportunities for photos. By seeing each other before the ceremony, we’ll have additional time to capture beautiful moments without feeling rushed. Your gallery will be more extensive and filled with various creative shots. We can explore different locations, experiment with lighting, and capture those perfect, candid moments.

Intimate Moment Alone:

A first look offers a rare, private moment just for the two of you. Weddings are busy, and private moments can be limited. During a first look, you can take as much time as you want to talk, embrace, show off your wedding outfits, or exchange notes or vows. This intimate time is truly precious, unlike the very public moment of seeing each other at the altar.

Better Use of Time:

Opting for a first look can streamline your wedding day schedule. We can complete most of the portraits before the ceremony, freeing you up to enjoy cocktail hour and spend more time with your guests. This means your family and friends won’t be waiting during your portrait session, making the day more enjoyable.

True Emotional Reactions:

A first look can lead to more genuine and expressive emotional reactions. You and your partner can fully express your emotions without holding back without an audience. Whether it’s tears, laughter, or a combination, the reactions during a first look are often more raw and heartfelt, creating authentic photos.

The Cons of a First Look

Breaking Tradition:

One of the main drawbacks of a first look is that it breaks the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony. For many couples, this tradition holds sentimental value. This might be a significant consideration if maintaining tradition is important to you or your family.

Altered Ceremony Emotion:

Some worry that a first look might alter the emotional impact of seeing each other at the altar. Even though the initial surprise might be lessened, many couples still feel incredibly moved by the ceremony. You can always keep some elements, like the veil, as a surprise for the ceremony. The excitement of walking down the aisle and the joy of saying your vows will still be incredibly special.

Friends and Family Might Want to Watch:

The couple intends for a first look to be a private moment, but sometimes friends and family want to watch. This can dampen the mood if you’re uncomfortable with an audience. It’s essential to be clear about your preferences and ensure this moment is private if that’s what you want.

You’ll Have to Start the Day Earlier:

When you do a first look on your wedding day, you’ll have to start your day earlier. Hair and makeup must be done earlier than usual to complete portraits in ample time before the ceremony, which might require touch-ups. Planning your timeline carefully is crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Advice for couples:

When deciding whether a first look is right for you and your partner, think about your priorities and how you envision your day. Here are a few tips to ensure your first look goes smoothly.

  1. Plan Your Timeline: Work with your photographer to create a timeline that allows for a relaxed first look and ample time for photos.
  2. Choose a Private Location: If you’ve got a spot at your wedding venue where you’d like to do the first look, you’ll want to let your photographer know. Otherwise, they will choose a location that offers privacy, a beautiful background, and the best lighting.
  3. Communicate Your Preferences: Be clear about who you want present (or not present) during the first look. Your photographer can also discuss a few different ways that you two can turn around and see one another for the first time.
  4. Embrace the Moment: Take your time and savor the moment. Nothing is more special than this time spent with just each other.
First Look

If you’re on the fence about doing a first look, I recommend doing one. Many couples express relief from their nerves and find that the anticipation of walking down the aisle is less intimidating after seeing each other. Your decision should align with your personal preferences, and don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise!

Whether you choose to do a first look or not, the most important thing is getting to marry your best friend. Enjoy every moment of your wedding day, and remember that it’s about celebrating your love and starting your life together.
